Look to Jesus: A Letter to My Daughter

Hello little one,

DSC_1879Sometimes our worst enemy is our own minds.  Our minds are constantly receiving messages from the world promoting the next style, the best vacation spot, the newest smart phone… anything that is bigger and better than what you have or who you are or where you’ve been.  In fact, this world is working around the clock to convince you that you haven’t arrived yet…that you always need just a little more.  But once you fall into the trap of believing that once you dress that way, visit that spot, or update your phone you will be happy, you will find it nearly insurmountable to climb out of it.

Satan wants nothing more than to see you slip into the mindset that what you have, who you are, or where you’re at is not enough. Sweet girl, when you allow Satan to insert these seeds of discontent within your heart they will grow and branch out until they have completely swallowed you up.

It will only leave you empty, hopeless, angry, ungrateful.

Instead of learning to see Jesus in and through every moment of life you begin to live for the next daddy-date or tea party or trip to see the butterflies.  And while God allows us many blessings and enjoyments on earth, they are nothing compared to the glory that awaits us in heaven.

Dear one, no matter how many different ways you fix your hair or paint your nails, no matter how many dresses you have or how much money you put in your piggy bank you will never be satisfied.  No matter when you get married or have kids or buy a house or if you do any of those things at all It. Will. Not. Satisfy.  But every day, Satan will try to convince you otherwise.  Always reminding you what you don’t have or what you can’t do.

So what can you do?  How do you guard your mind to stand above the pressure to have more?  Be more?

Look to Jesus, sweet heart.  Remind yourself that the most wonderful thing you can be is YOU.  Our Creator God does not make mistakes.  You are exactly the way God wanted you to be.  Your passion, your joy, your imagination, your strength, your tender heart….they are all beautiful things that were chosen by God to make you, you.  Rather than being known for the beautiful dresses you wear, let others see the beauty in your heart as you choose to love God and love others.

Look to Jesus, my lovely girl.  When you look at your reflection, your closet, your accomplishments, or your bank account and feel like it will never be enough, remind yourself that HE IS ENOUGH.  Jesus, the Son of God who gave His life in exchange for yours, is enough.  And the hope of glory that awaits all those whom He calls His own far outweighs all that this world tries to offer you.

Look to Jesus and you will begin to see all the ways that He is at work in you, through you, and all around you.  And when your mind is fixed on Christ, you will find that all else fades away.  As you train your mind to think on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy the grip that this world has on your mind will loosen, and the seeds of discontent will have no soil in which to flourish.

DSC_0798Look to Jesus, little one, and allow Him to renew your mind day by day.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.”
Phil 4:7

I love you

-Mommy
